The Anse-La-Raye (St. Lucia) Association UK (A.L.R.A)
was formed on 1st November 1992.
It is a charitable organisation, which was set up to raise funds to
help in the development of Anse-La-Raye. In summary, the main
objectives of the group were to link all Anse-la-Rayans living in the
UK
culturally and socially; to facilitate in the development and
improvement of the local community; and to help increase the profile of
Anse-La-Raye in general. The Association has an established management
committee headed by Mr Ryan Marquis – President, Mrs Felicia Hippolyte
– Secretary, Mr Manases Gresham – Treasurer, Mr Philip Philip – Public
Relations Officer, Mrs Colita Auguste – Organising Secretary and a
number of Trustees.
In
1995, the A.L.R.A. established a local committee in the village of
Anse-La-Raye to administer the work of the
UK
based Association. This linkage has been very useful, as it has
assisted members in deciding on areas and activities where funds and
other resources are most needed and should be directed.
The
A.L.R.A has been very influential and has assisted immensely in the
development and regeneration of the village. A summary of its main
contribution is detailed below:
-
Donated significant funds to the hurricane disaster relief in October
1996.
-
Purchased a ‘Millennium Bus’ for the village to shuttle school pupils
to and from school and other related trips.
-
Purchased and distributed educational equipment to schools and the
local library.
-
Established and sponsored the Annual Top Students Award, Annual
Schools Sports Day and the distribution of Christmas toys to schools.
-
Continuing to fund the annual Christmas & Easter meals for the
elderly.
-
Donated wheelchairs to the local Health Centre and assisting with
medical expenses for individuals.
-
Provided extensive funds for the renovation of the local church and
hall and the building of the elderly/disabled home.
-
Assisted and sponsored several arts, cultural and sporting events in
Anse-La-Raye.
In
addition to the considerable contribution already given, the group has
also jointly donated funds to the Golden Hope (La Toc Mental Hospital)
Fund to assist in the renovation of the building, and made a generous
donation to the Castries Cathedral Fire Victim Fund. The A.L.R.A. has
also contributed generously to organisations unconnected with
Anse-La-Raye including, giving an annual donation to The British Red
Cross Appeal for Worldwide Relief, and making a charitable contribution
to the Montserrat Volcanic Appeal.
